Breaking frontiers in biocomposites with high performance for multi-sector applications
The BIOntier project is a Horizon Europe initiative focused on developing next-generation sustainable, lightweight, and recyclable bio-based composites with enhanced mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. It aims to support the EU’s circular bioeconomy by advancing manufacturing processes and validating biob-based composites enabled products across six industrial use cases in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and water treatment. The project also emphasizes circular design, life-cycle assessment, and end-of-life strategies to ensure environmental and economic sustainability.
Brightlands Materials Center (BMC), part of TNO, plays a key role in the project by leading the development and validation of recycling strategies for thermoplastic composites. BMC contributes its expertise in thermoplastic composites mechanical recycling, processing, and testing, and coordinates the physical evaluation of end-of-life solutions for selected use cases.
BIOntier brings together 25 partners from 12 countries, including research institutions, SMEs, and large industries, to scale innovations from TRL4-5 to TRL6-7 and accelerate market uptake.
