Reducing CO2 emissions by making vehicles lighter

The Perspective program is a program that challenges scientists to establish innovative new lines of research that can have a genuine economic and societal impact. Part of this is the research project is known as: ‘Reducing CO2 emissions by making vehicles lighter’ in which Brightlands Materials Center is involved. Together with other partners our Lightweight Automotive program focuses on ways to produce reliable entire structures using thermoplastic composites in a predictable, reproducible and cost-effective way.

The project concerns the processing, structure formation and performance of thermoplastic composite materials, and the optimization of integrated structures. Particularly, the research focuses on the overmolding and joining techniques, which are critical in building complex composite structures from melt and pre-fabricated components. Within this scope, beside experimental studies, advanced simulations play a major role. Also check out this video.

We are grateful for the confidence and recognition of the importance by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. Brightlands Materials Center, TNO and other partners in the University of Twente consortium received over €6 million for the Perspective program.
