Our Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland project SUNOVATE focuses on smart heat management in energy-efficient windows and building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Within the project we are developing thermochromic infrared (IR) regulating pigments and integrate them into functional polymer films for lamination of safety glass. To this end, SUNOVATE builds on the knowledge within Interreg project EnergyEfficiency (2016-2019) in the field of heat-regulating multifunctional coatings in buildings. Furthermore, we are developing IR blocking encapsulants to reduce the operating temperature in solar panels. Both technologies will be demonstrated on pilot scale in test buildings. The SUNOVATE technologies reduce the energy consumption in buildings via smart solar heat regulating windows and increase on-site solar energy harvesting via increased power output and lifetime of BIPV. In this way, SUNOVATE makes a major contribution to the goal of an energy and climate-neutral built environment by 2050.
